Why was this BUI originally listed as not impaired?

• In the 1991 Detroit River RAP Stage 1 Report, this BUI was listed as ‘not impaired’ based on limited information (MDNR/MOE 1991).

This BUI will be considered to be ‘not impaired’ when….

 There are no significant additional costs required to use raw Detroit River water for agricultural and industrial purposes.

What was done?

• 2010 Raw Water Users Survey: The DRCC surveyed six local organizations that used raw Detroit River water. Respondents reported routine operating costs related to ice, silt (turbidity), and intake screen debris, such as heat exchanger maintenance and debris disposal. Raw river water was used for cooling, drinking water supply, and aquatic facilities because of its convenience, cost savings, and conservation benefits. Overall, these costs were considered normal expenses associated with private water intakes rather than additional costs attributable to conditions in the Detroit River AOC, and participants indicated that the benefits of using raw river water outweighed these expenses.

• The status changed to not impaired in 2010

• The Detroit River AOC includes 11 BUIs on the American side and 14 on the Canadian side. BUI 8 is unique to the Canadian AOC and is not recognized as an impairment in the American AOC
